Communication Works provides advisory services to government, donors and the private sector as we believe that all three are critical partners in the development agenda of South Africa.  We have combined our experience from the public sector, the private sector and international development partners to offer our clients specialised services.

We are driven by the desire to make a positive difference in South Africa and underpinning our business are the values of honesty, integrity, self-belief, putting others first and fairness.

Government Performance
We have a range of consulting services aimed at improving government performance.  These include:

•    Business cases and feasibility studies for establishing public entities and government components
•    Restructuring in the public sector (including function shifts between government departments)
•    Evaluation and review of government policies and programmes.
•    Assessing the departmental readiness for audits of performance information.

Development monitoring and evaluation
Communication Works introduced development monitoring and evaluation as a new service line in 2008.  To date we have completed evaluations for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Headquarters.  These include:

•    Leading the evaluation of UNDP’s Country Programme in Nepal (2011)
•    Leading the evaluation of the UNDP’s Country Programme in Ghana  (2010)
•    Leading the development theme of the Joint South Africa-UN Evaluation of the Role and Contribution of the United Nations System to South Africa (2008)

Through this process we have developed good experience in UNDP policies and procedures, as well as understanding of the broader UN System.

Enterprise Development and Corporate Social Investment
Communication Works initiated the SpaceToSay programme in late 2009.  The programme works with schools to help them to grow good reputations to show that they are worth investing in.  Several additional programmes within the School initiative aim at developing ethical leadership amongst learners and educators.  We currently work with schools in Tembisa, Lenasia and Soshanguve. Significant partnerships to date include FirstRand, Budget Car Rental, Old Mutual and City of Johannesburg.  In 2010 SpaceToSay identified 21 young leaders from 7 of its schools.  These learners are being developed to lead environmental management programmes in their schools in 2011.

SpaceToSay also works with Black women in small enterprises to brand themselves and show big business that they are worth investing in.  This programme incorporates two groups involving some 60 women in total, representing 28 business entities.

Thanks to the success of our programmes, we founded the SpaceToSay Foundation in August 2010 (Trust IT2207/10) and registered it as a non-profit organisation (084-489-NPO) in November 2010.  The aim for SpaceToSay Foundation is to grow mutually beneficial partnerships between the private sector and approved beneficiaries from disadvantaged communities.
